Animals of the world - Card 41 - Hyaena

Card number 41 of 64. The text says:

Hyaena
(Hyaena striata)
Hyaenas found from the Caucasus to the Bay of Bengal and in northern and eastern Africa are noted scavengers. They have been known to take living prey, but mostly they clean up the kill after the hunting animals have abandoned it, they can make a meal from a skeleton that even the jakals and vultures have abandoned.

The following is an interesting video of a single Hyaena guarding a salvaged carcase its pack is eating from.
Hyaenas in general are described by the IUCN Hyaena Specialist Group as "very important and influential inhabitants of most African and some Asian ecosystems". I had understood that Hyaenas were primarily meat eaters, apparently that is not the only case. Hyaenas born in the wild regularly consume a more balanced diet including some fruit and insects.
